Hackelia floribunda (Stickseed)

Order Boraginales, Family Boraginaceae, Genus Hackelia

This is what I call a "native nuiscance." If you have dogs or teenagers who are given to prowling in the bushes, just be aware that these do produce burrs. Fortunately, they can be controlled by hand pulling, preferably before the burrs harden. You will have to check your meadows every year, however, as these plants have a seed bank in the soil, as do most plants.

These plants are over four feet tall.

The flowers reveal the relationship with the tiny alpine Forget-me-not.

This is truly the plant of your nightmares.

Would you want one of these in your sock?
