Juniperus scopulorum, a "scale-leaf Juniper" occurs globally throughout the northern hemisphere. It is quite common in lower elevations of the Southwestern U.S, where it has several cousins: Utah Juniper (Juniperus osteosperma), One-seed Juniper (Juniperus monosperma), and Alligator Juniper (Juniperus deppeana). The genus name Sabina refers to a plant in western and central Asia and the mountains of central and southern Europe. Wikipedia and Southwest Colorado Wildflowers have more information.


Juniperus scopulorum has scale-like leaves, while Juniperus communis has needles.

Female berries are actually cones which trun blue when mature.

Male cones are tiny and can be abundant.

Male cones are hardly more than 3 or 4 mm in length.

This individual has been scarred by wire fencing.
