Magnolia Wildlife Inventory - 1995 to Present. Birds , mammals and to lesser extent other orders reported to Cherie Long by residents of the Planning Area. The results are compiled monthly, but revised as possible when late reports are received. Observations are from home yards and feeders, hikes and rides (via various modes) in area. Numbers are grossly inaccurate due to variation in the number and diligence of the reporters, but do give a picture of what animals are in the area and to some extent their relative abundance and seasonal variation.
Flammulated Owl and Goshawk Survey - 1996. Volunteers equipped with taped calls of the target species went to designated transects, played the tapes according to protocol and recorded responses.
Bat Survey - 1996. Two volunteers (Dr. Rick Adams and Mark Tracy-CSU) mist-netted bats on Reynolds Ranch during the summer of 1996. They also investigated a few other parts of the Planning Area. The study was incomplete because of a combination of a very late start and inclement weather on some dates.
Butterfly Survey - 1997. This was conducted by Janet Chu on two occasions in mid-summer 1997. The field studies were cut short by inclement weather. More study is needed.
Breeding Bird Survey - 1997. The Planning Area was divided into study blocks assigned to volunteers with expertise in recognizing birds by sight and sound. The study was conducted using the methodology of the Colorado Breeding Bird Atlas Survey.
Longterm Bird Study - 1998 to present. Transects have been selected in various habitats and point counts made by volunteers on at least 3 occasions during the summer (June 1-Aug. 15). Hopefully, other transects can be added and manned. This is designed to be a continuing study to reflect changes in bird population in the area over time.
